Dear Richard, first of all, thanks for summarizing our current situation and a glimpse on our way forward. In my talks to corporate leaders I note three types of responses to our current crisis: 1. There is no crisis or I don't care or It is not my fault, 2. I think we must do something but don't touch in my 20% growth target and my bonus or Triple Bottom Line means achieving our financial goals and adding some social and environmental elements to it and 3. I know we need more radical change, but if I do it I will be out of business because the market will not understand. Regarding this third type, how can we best support them in dealing with the wider system they are embedded in, considering that most stockholders are still worried only about the next quarter results?

Richard Hames

Hi Marcelo. Good question. But I think the third situation is not a pure position. Those people that are really convinced we need more radical change are already doing it - in one way or another. We need to support those that espouse change but dither - usually because they lack courage, or a viable way forward, or are simply afraid of the consequences because they are too much of an unknown. I usually connect the two types so that the former can mentor the latter and give them concrete examples as well as the courage to try.
